Requirements to Request PLA
PLA is intended for students who are already in a program and want to determine whether prior learning can count toward remaining degree requirements. If you are still considering Rowan, mid-application, or just accepted--continue to work with Admissions when talking about transfer credit.
You may be eligible if you:
- Rowan University students enrolled in an undergraduate bachelor’s degree or a graduate master’s degree.
- Rowan University students with at least three completed credits at Rowan University (transfer credit does not qualify)
- Have room to complete credits within DegreeWorks.
A Successful Example
Documented training that students have accummulated throughout their careers can be evaluated and college credit can possibly be granted for that training. The training has to be consistent with the Learning Outcomes of Rowan courses.
A student in Computer Systems Technology may seek credit for Microcomputer Operating Systems I: Workstation by submitting the Microsoft Endpoint Administrator Certificate for review. That request may be approved if the certificate demonstrates learning that aligns with course outcomes such as:
Protecting Windows workstations from malware and security threats
Distinguishing among different types of Windows installations
setting up Windows networking in IPv4 and IPv6
Identifying access methods related to authentication and authorization
In that case, the faculty review is based on whether the certification reflects learning equivalent to the course outcomes — not just whether the student completed a Microsoft credential.

A Second Successful Example
In 2023, a student in the BA in Construction Management submitted 9 licenses and received 12 credits of General Elective Credit that was approved by the College of Engineering faculty and granted by the registrar. Please note that this student was given General Elective credit and this did not replace any required Construction Management courses or Rowan Core/General Education Courses that is required for this particular degree.
